Description
MOnline video game Fortnite was created by Epic Games and published in 2017. It is offered in three different game mode variations, all of which use the same basic gameplay and game engine: Up to 100 players compete in the free-to-play battle royale game Fortnite Battle Royale to be the last person standing; The cooperative tower defense-shooter and survival game Fortnite: Save the World, in which up to four players fend off zombie-like creatures and defend locations with traps and fortifications they can construct, and Fortnite Creative, in which players are given complete freedom to create worlds and battle arenas.
Battle Royale and Save the Planet were early access releases in 2017, while Creativity was made available on December 6, 2018. Fortnite Battle Royale in particular became an enormous hit and a cultural phenomenon, attracting more than 125 million players in less than a year, making hundreds of millions of dollars each month, while the Save the World and Creativity variants have proven lucrative for Epic Games. Up to December 2019, Fortnite as a whole made $9 billion in gross revenue.
Battle Royale and Creativity were launched for all of aforementioned platforms, as well as for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android smartphones, whilst Save the World is only available for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles of the ninth generation were both released at the same time as the game.
